Tool Kit: Photography Equipment

Here are six items to help round out your photography tool kit.

The Photo-e-Box BIO is a complete, compact, self-contained photography lighting studio with no external light source needed. With easy set up and a small footprint, it is perfect for field photography. With color-corrected fluorescent lights, high-powered LED lights, ultraviolet (black) lights, and individual light control switches, the Photo-e-Box BIO is ideal for shooting high-quality photographs of crime-scene evidence. The camera bracket is sturdy enough for heavy DSLR cameras.

The SPOT SprintPic from SPOT Imaging Solutions is a turnkey macro imaging system, saving time in your crime lab. The SprintPic Software provides a monitor-sized live image preview with sliders for adjusting zoom level and iris aperture. Photos are immediately ready for adding case annotations, or for saving to reports; no need to wait for images to download. Built-in oblique and bottom lighting ensures true color reproduction and shadow removal.

The Phase One iXR camera system helps streamline the digitization workflow by enabling full control of the entire process. Using the iXR camera system with Phase One’s Capture One workflow software, photographers can take advantage of remote focus and easily move from live view to capture at the click of a mouse. The iXR incorporates a rugged design that does away with both a mirror and view finder to reduce moving parts and subsequent vibrations.

The Quadrapod Elite copy stand is used by crime scene investigators for collection requirements in the field and laboratory. The copy stand features four telescoping legs that provide stability on level or uneven surfaces. It is equipped with a quick-release head that allows a variety of cameras, lenses, magnifiers, light sources and scopes to be easily attached, expediting set-up and use. The minimum camera-to-subject working distance is approximately 14 in. with a variable 22 x 15 in. footprint.

The strong and versatile RAM suction cup mount kit consists of a 3.25-in. diameter twist-lock suction cup base, short (2.38-in.) double socket arm, and 1-in. diameter ball with custom GoPro Hero adapter. The rubber ball-and-socket system offers adjustment points at both ends of the double socket arm allowing for almost infinite adjustment and perfect viewing angles. The design provides a strong hold on glass and nonporous surfaces. The mounts are available for any camera with a 0.25-in.-20 thread.

The LitePad LED fixtures from Rosco Laboratories provide diffused lighting for crime scene and forensic photography. LitePad products are available in multiple forms and sizes from 3 in. round to 24 x 24 in. LitePad HO+ is perfect as a portable light table or for handheld macro shots. LitePad Axiom is housed in a durable aluminum frame designed for easy mounting onto light stands. LitePad Loop quickly attaches to any camera, providing shadowless, on-axis light.

SKELETONIZED REMAINS that were carefully unearthed from the desert sands of Iraq tell their own story: the bones of an adult, still dressed in a woman’s apparel, lie supine. The skull is perforated by a bullet hole. Tucked in the space between the ribs and the left humerus is a much smaller skeleton, bones in the skull un-fused, and the fully clothed body partially swaddled in a blanket.
