This police-spec, super-bright dual LED light fastens onto shirt or jacket pockets for concealed, hands-free operation on a 360º rotating, removable clip. Its 90º adjustable light arm closes flat when not in use. Two replaceable CR2032 button batteries are included and provide approximately 50 hours of continuous use. The instant on/off touch switch has an automatic battery-saving 10-minute shutoff timer. Water resistant construction and flashing strobe mode make this an ideal personal light and safety device. Available in dual white LED or one red, one white LED.


This portable LED area light, the 9420 Remote Area Lighting System (RALS), is the latest offering from Pelican’s Remote Area Lighting Group. It is designed for quick and simple crime scene lighting. The light’s two next-generation LEDs shine up to 1,000 lumens in high mode for 2 consecutive hours and 500 lumens in low mode for up to 4 hours. Powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery, the light is fully cordless and weighs 8.4 pounds. Its 5-foot mast and integrated tripod legs are fully collapsible and deploy in seconds.


The Fenix TK22 tactical/forensic flashlight from Fenix Tactical boasts five different output modes, with a maximum output of 650 lumens. Its heavy-duty rechargeable 18650 battery will run for 1.5 hours at 650 lumens, 3.5 hours at 250 lumens, 17 hours at 75 lumens, or 168 hours at 7 lumens. Its digitally regulated output maintains constant brightness. It has side controls and a tail-cap momentary switch. The flashlight is made of aircraft-grade aluminum with a hard-anodized anti-abrasive finish and ultra-clear glass lens.


ASP’s Triad USB is a Micro USB rechargeable tactical LED light. Powered by an 18650-lithium ion battery, the Triad USB can be recharged using a computer laptop or a cell phone charger. It produces a brilliant 300 lumens of light with a continuous runtime of two hours. The flashlight has a 3-position switch (intermittent, locking, constant-on) and a foamed, vinyl grip that provides insulation from the heat this type of light gives off. The Triad USB is designed with “Dual Fuel Technology” meaning it can be powered by two CR123A batteries in the event recharging is impossible.


Photon’s Proton PRO offers a choice of white beam (115 lumens) or UV models in its high-powered compact flashlight, powered by a single AA battery. The original Proton features a single 2W Cree LED, plus a secondary low-power red beam. The Proton’s UV model takes advantage of this dual beam-color feature to provide an incredibly powerful 375nm UV beam for easy use in broad daylight, plus a secondary white beam for general-purpose use. The Proton features intuitive one-button access to full-range brightness control and safety strobe functions for both the primary and secondary beam.


The 12,000,000 candlepower Maxa Beam Searchlight is a battery-powered illumination system that provides focused, intense light suitable for evidence identification, collection, and area lighting. The Maxa Beam features a motorized beam with adjustment from a 1° spot to a 40° flood, meaning that the beam diameter can be easily adjusted to illuminate a specific area with the touch of a button. The Maxa Beam utilizes an 85-watt Xenon Short Arc lamp with a wide-energy output in the UV, visible, and IR spectrums. Beam-shaping filters and selective bandpass filters such as ultraviolet, amber, and infrared are available.

The TIKKA XP 2 headlamp from Petzl integrates two light sources as well as a wide-angle lens with a simple open-close feature, allowing the user to choose between a long-distance focused beam and flood-beam proximity lighting. This headlamp is equipped with a white high-output LED and a red LED. The white LED delivers 80 lumens in maximum mode and lights up to 68 meters. In economic mode, it can reach a burn-time of 190 hours. The red LED provides back-up lighting useful for preserving night vision, or strobe lighting.

Court Case Update

FINGERPRINT EVIDENCE went through a nearly three-year ordeal in the New Hampshire court system, but eventually emerged unscathed. On April 4, 2008, the New Hampshire Supreme Court unanimously reversed the decision of a lower court to exclude expert testimony regarding fingerprint evidence in the case of The State of New Hampshire v. Richard Langill. The case has been remanded back to the Rockingham County Superior Court.
