Attention Researchers:

  • Evidence Technology Magazine is a business-to-business publication, not a peer-reviewed journal. If you wish to publish the results of scientific research in a professional, peer-reviewed journal, you should be aware that many journals will not accept a manuscript if the details of that research have already been disclosed in some form of public media (e.g. magazine, press release, website, bulletin board, etc.). In other words, publish the details of your scientific research in a journal first. Then talk to the editorial staff at Evidence Technology Magazine and we may be able to work together to produce a completely different, more mainstream piece for our general crime-scene and forensic-science readership.

Advice for authors:

  • The goal of Evidence Technology Magazine is to provide an open forum for the discussion of issues surrounding evidence collection, processing, and preservation. A well-written article should do two things:
  1. It should be understandable to every reader with any level of knowledge and experience; and
  2. It should provide useful information to every reader with any level of knowledge and experience.
  • If you have a story to tell—a case study or technical article, for example—that you think would be useful to our readers, we welcome your submission of materials. Here are some things to keep in mind:
    • If you haven’t already written the article, send a brief outline of your proposed article to the editor (Kristi Mayo: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Opening a dialogue with the editor will give you the opportunity to get guidelines on length, style, and deadlines. We may also not be able to use your article (for example, if a similar article is already scheduled in an upcoming issue of the magazine)—so your inquiry could save you time and effort.
    • Provide photographs and/or illustrations! What you write is most important, but readers also like to look at pictures. We like to publish pictures. Including photos or illustrations with your submission will make it much more attractive and increase your likelihood of getting published. (Please note: Digital photographs must be high resolution—300 dpi and, if possible, at least 7 inches wide. The bigger the photo and the higher the resolution, the better. These large digital files can be delivered using a file-sharing site such as Dropbox or burned onto a CD and mailed to our office.)
    • Please do not simultaneously submit your article to multiple publications. When we receive an article for consideration, we assume it has been submitted to us exclusively.
    • If your article is accepted for publication in Evidence Technology Magazine, please do not offer that article (or a very similar version of the article) to another publication or website. This is considered unethical behavior in the publishing industry.
    • Please indicate whether your article has been previously published in other magazines, newsletters, professional journals, or websites. Be aware that if the article has been previously published, we are likely to turn down publication of the article in Evidence Technology Magazine.
    • Unsolicited articles are filed for future consideration. They may be used at any time. You are welcome to contact us (e-mail preferred) to check on the status of your submission. If you want your submission materials returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE).
    • Your article will be edited for style, content, and fit. You will be contacted prior to publication, and you will have the opportunity to approve any changes that are made to the article. All articles are reviewed by the Evidence Technology Magazine Advisory Board.

Advice for vendors:

  • Articles must be vendor-neutral. While our readers are interested in learning about the latest in evidence technology, they will quickly recognize—and dismiss—a fluff piece designed solely to sell your product. Here are some tips if you are considering authoring an article for Evidence Technology Magazine:
  1. Instead of focusing on your product and its features, focus your article on a particular need or issue facing our readers. Provide some background on that issue. How can crime-scene units overcome this issue? Or, look at general tips and techniques for a particular discipline or type of product: For example, if your product is a widget, your article could focus on tips for keeping widgets in working order.
  2. Articles that include comments from several of your product’s end-users can be very effective. Be sure to structure the article in traditional feature-article format; do not simply list quotes and names (i.e. “These widgets really work great!” —Sgt. Smith).
  3. If your company is releasing new, unique technology that represents a major change in the crime-scene field, we may be interested in covering that release. Please contact us if there are major developments in your company.
  4. Remember our “Tool Kit” section, a free service to our vendors. This section, which appears in every issue, includes a photograph of your product, a brief description, and your website address. This section is also archived on our website where your website address will be an active link.
  5. Also, please note our stance on simultaneous submissions:
  • Please do not simultaneously submit your article to multiple publications. When we receive an article for consideration, we assume it has been submitted to us exclusively.

Tool Kit Guidelines:

  1. Review our Tool Kit topics in the Editorial Calendar and pick the one most applicable to your product or service.
  2. Include “Tool Kit” in your e-mail subject line.
  3. Explain in the first two sentences how your product is used by crime-scene or forensic-lab personnel.
  4. Include a 100-word description of the product and what sets it apart from similar products.
  5. Include a high-resolution photograph of the product, or—if the product is computer software—a picture of the box or an interesting screen shot. For Tool Kit purposes, “high-resolution” means at least 4 inches wide at 300 dpi. Avoid distracting backgrounds or graphic-heavy images. A simple, clean picture of your product on a plain background is most effective.
