How Forensic Research and Development Solves Crimes

Just as research and development in medicine is crucial to advancing public health, R&D in forensic science is crucial to improving public safety and the administration of justice. Since 2009, NIJ has awarded more than 250 grants worth more than $100 million for forensic science research. This portfolio has contributed significant changes to the way forensic scientists work by improving the reliability of forensic markers and measurements, validating processes, and increasing efficiencies through the development of technology or the retirement of weak methods.

Research and development is criminal justice’s silent but powerful partner. Strengthening the scientific foundation of forensics helps law enforcement identify suspects more quickly, prosecutors bring charges more accurately, and defense lawyers exonerate the innocent. Forensic Podiatry (Part Two of Two)

THE DISCIPLINE of forensic podiatry—or, in other words, the examination of pedal evidence—has progressed significantly over the past ten years. It is no longer a question of “What can you do with a footprint?” but rather, “Who can we use to evaluate the footprint?” Cases involving pedal evidence, especially bloody footprints and issues of determining shoe sizing or fit issues compared to questioned footwear, have become more common over the past two or three years.
