Training: Core Essentials of Crime Scene Investigation

Forensic Training Source is excited to announce The Core Essentials of Crime Scene Investigation! Session I begins August 8-26, 2016.

What is it?

The Core Essentials of Crime Scene Investigation (CECSI) is a three-week in-residence course that takes place in Alcoa, Tenn. with housing provided in the heart of West Knoxville. During the course, participants will receive 40 hours of Crime Scene Photography training instructed by John Williams and Kerri McClary, 40 hours of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis training instructed by Paul Kish, and 40 hours of Shooting Incident Reconstruction training instructed by Jim Molinaro and Howie Ryan. In only three weeks, participants will learn essential crime scene investigation techniques from top-tier instructors at a fraction of the time and cost of other programs.


In an effort to make the CECSI course as cost effective as possible for participants, Forensic Training Source (FTS) has arranged for each participant to share with one other course participant a fully furnished, luxury, two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in a gated apartment community. Located in West Knoxville, housing is less than 20 minutes from the training venues and close to Turkey Creek offering plenty of restaurants and entertainment options for when class is over each day. The CECSI course fee INCLUDES this housing. Please contact FTS for a reduced fee if you live within 30 miles and plan to commute.

Topics of Instruction

Week One - Crime Scene Photography
Instructed by John Williams and Kerri McClary

This is a comprehensive course for forensic personnel designed to teach basic and advanced photographic techniques that are required to document crime scenes and accident scenes for court presentation. Attendees will receive 40 hours of training that will include the following topics:

• Functions, controls, and menu settings of digital single-lens-reflex (DSLR) cameras
• Depth of field and motion control
• Close-up photography and photography using forensic light sources
• Functions and controls of detachable flash units
• Solving lighting problems using fill-flash, painting with light and polarizing filters
• Photographing victims and suspects
• Managing digital images
• Photographing latent blood reagents
• Photographing projectile flight paths using lasers

Week Two - Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
Instructed by Paul Kish

This 40-hour module will provide the participants with first-hand knowledge of bloodstain pattern analysis. The module is divided into both lecture and laboratory sessions. The theoretical and fundamental principles of the discipline will be illustrated in the lecture segments and then will be reinforced in the laboratory segments with hands on applications. Each student will be afforded the opportunity to learn how blood reacts under known conditions and create reference patterns for future use.

Upon completion of this module, the participants will have acquired a basic understanding of how bloodstain pattern analysis will assist in their investigation of crime scenes where blood has been shed.

This module is well aligned with the recommended 40-hour course curriculum set forth by the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts and has been designed for investigators, crime scene technicians, forensic scientists, attorneys, and medico-legal investigators. Topics include:

Week Three - Shooting Incident Reconstruction
Instructed by Jim Molinaro and Howard Ryan

This is a 40 hour module of instruction utilizing a combination of classroom-based and practical exercises. Topics include:

• Shooting reconstruction terminology
• Internal, external and terminal ballistics
• Gunshot residue and range of fire determination
• Identifying, detecting, measuring and describing bullet marks
• Projectile behavior on varying targets including dry wall, wood, metal, plastic, glass, fabric and concrete
• Proper recording/documentation of bullet marks
• Motor vehicles as a target surface
• Humans as a target surface
• Flight path reconstruction, description and documentation
• Report writing - putting analysis and conclusions into words
• Courtroom testimony - explain/describe analysis and reconstruction
