Property and Evidence Training in North Carolina

The North Carolina Association for Property and Evidence will host its 2018 Spring Training Conference in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, March 19 - 21, 2018.

NCAPE is a nonprofit association dedicated to the Property and Evidence Professionals who work for all of North Carolina’s Law Enforcement Agencies and any other entity that has a legal obligation to help protect, preserve, maintain and produce property and evidence involved in any legal action. As an association of peers, we are joined together to help develop and implement standards and to educate ourselves in the evidence process. We strive to increase the importance of having Professionally Trained Evidence Technicians and to help facilitate that training to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities.

NCAPE is open to anyone who meets the criteria of membership and you do not have to be from North Carolina to join; we currently have members from South Carolina. While we attempt to train on NC-specific laws, many of our training topics and vendors provide information that would apply to anyone serving in a property and evidence capacity in any jurisdiction.

We are not just for the evidence clerk either. Many of our members are persons involved in the entire chain of command: supervisors, sergeants, lieutenants, captains…all the way to the top with several chiefs of police.

There are many laws that govern the proper handling of property and evidence in North Carolina and if you do not know these it can be big trouble for you, your agency, and your court system. Become a member and enjoy the peer-to-peer networking that we have become known for. It’s nice to be able to pick up the phone and call someone from another agency who does the same job you do, especially if you are the only person in your agency that performs that job or you supervise someone in this role.

NCAPE also provides on-site technical visits to your agency, free of charge, at the request of the agency head or evidence room supervisor, to help you assess your current evidence operation and make recommendations for improvements if needed. We can provide a partial audit if requested by your agency—but we do not perform entire inventories.

We have been serving North Carolina since 2010. Please come join us at our 2018 Spring Training Conference in Carolina Beach, NC March 19 - 21 at the Courtyard by Marriott. It is a two-and-a-half-day conference for $40. Membership is only $35 annually (so you will be covered for the Fall Training Conference if you choose to join us in October in the mountains). The rooms have been blocked for our guests at $84 a night. We will also welcome new vendors on a case-by-case basis, based on our available vendor space.

Lifting Latent Fingerprints from Difficult Surfaces

ALMOST ANYONE can find, process, and lift a latent print that happens to be in a logical and obvious place like a door handle, a beer can, or a butcher knife. But sometimes, a latent print is not just sitting there in a logical and obvious place. Sometimes, you have to use your imagination to find the print and your skills to lift it.
