Forensic scientists require fast, reliable methods to put toxicology results in the hands of evidence-seeking authorities. The GCMS-QP2010 Ultra from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments is optimized for forensic and toxicology testing, featuring high-sensitivity scanning measurements for simultaneous multi-compound analysis.

The GC/MS toxicology screening system optimizes all of the data acquisition analysis settings for improved identification of compounds. The GCMS-QP2010 Ultra can be used to identify abused drugs such as stimulants, narcotics and other illegal substances. It also can provide an estimated quantification result for compounds detected at poisoning incidents.

Using GCMSsolution workstation software, the system provides versatile functionality using retention indices. Using retention indices and a mass spectrum, in combination with the Automatic Adjustment of Retention Time (AART) function, makes identification easier and more effective.

The screening system’s comprehensive database contains 1,011 mass spectra for 502 toxicology and forensic-related compounds, including psychotropic drugs, general drugs and pesticides. For compounds detected at poisoning incidents, the response factors related to internal standards are also registered, and simple estimation of the quantitation value is possible.

Additionally, the mass spectral library contained in the database can be used for quick AMDIS (Automated Mass Spectral Deconvolution and Identification System) program analysis provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The AMDIS program allows users to identify target compounds and discover unknown components using a mass spectrum and deconvolution function.

Court Case Update

FINGERPRINT EVIDENCE went through a nearly three-year ordeal in the New Hampshire court system, but eventually emerged unscathed. On April 4, 2008, the New Hampshire Supreme Court unanimously reversed the decision of a lower court to exclude expert testimony regarding fingerprint evidence in the case of The State of New Hampshire v. Richard Langill. The case has been remanded back to the Rockingham County Superior Court.
