AAFS Presents Early Achievement Award

November 12, 2019 — The AAFS Past Presidents Council announced that the recipient of the Outstanding Early Career Achievement in Forensic Science Award is Audrey M. Williams, PhD, an Associate Member in the Criminalistics Section.

The award will be presented by Susan Ballou, Chair of the Past Presidents Council, on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, during the AAFS Annual Business Meeting in Anaheim, CA. Dr. Williams will receive $1,000 and a commemorative plaque. In addition, the Academy will pay the expenses of her attendance at the annual meeting including registration, coach airfare, up to five nights’ lodging at the annual meeting, and up to $75 per diem.

The criteria for the Outstanding Early Career Achievement in Forensic Science Award are: (1) the recipient shall be an Associate Member, Member, or Fellow of the AAFS; (2) the recipient shall have been eligible for the status of Associate Member of the Academy no more than ten (10) years prior to their nomination; and (3) the recipient shall have demonstrated both leadership and outstanding achievement through contributions that have served to advance forensic science and its application to the legal system in a manner that promotes professionalism, integrity, competency, education, research, practice, and collaboration.

Dr. Williams is the Director of the Forensic Science Center (FSC) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) which supports the United States federal government in the analyses of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials (CBRNE). Historically, the FSC has also assisted state and local jurisdictions in extraordinary homicide, serial bomber, illicit drug, materials profiling, and toxin investigations. Dr. Williams is an analytical and forensic chemist whose research focus areas are the characterization of chemical attribution signatures of chemical warfare agents and opioids, development and applications of biomarkers of chemical exposure, and multidisciplinary questioned sample exploitation. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Criminal Justice from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 2003, a Master of Science in Forensic Science from Michigan State University in 2006, and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Michigan State University in 2009. She is a member of the AAFS as well as the American Chemical Society.
