Organization Offers On-Demand Forensic Nursing Courses

May 25, 2021 — Dealing with cases of interpersonal violence and trauma is a critical task assigned to forensic nurses, physicians, attorneys, advocates, law enforcement, and other first responders. In an effort to provide educational opportunities to a wide audience, the Academy of Forensic Nursing has made several of its Virtual Boot Camps available online and on demand.

Criminal Case Consulting, Defensible Documentation, and Ethical Expert Testimony
The sessions in this Virtual Boot Camp Series will review the significance of providing evidence-based responses to those impacted by crime, violence, and abuse, as well as the need for accurate forensic documentation. The the final session will review how forensic nurses can leverage their knowledge, skills, and critical thinking aptitudes to deliver ethical testimony in criminal and civil proceedings. The class includes presentations on developing and keeping current a Curriculum Vitae, what to do when receiving a subpoena, preparing for testimony, and expert testimony approaches for both direct and cross examination.

Principles and Practice for the Medicolegal Death Investigator
This four-hour workshop will provide participants with an overview of the various systems involved in medicolegal death investigations, the differences between medicolegal death investigation and law enforcement roles, and the causes and manners of death.

Forensic Nursing Responses to the Epidemic of Strangulation
Like the risk and severity of non-fatal strangulation, the medical forensic examination of patients who have experienced this mechanism of injury can be misunderstood. This course will provide learners with the state-of-the-art knowledge necessary to understand forensic evidence collection, neurobiology of trauma, the lethality associated with non-fatal strangulation, medical risks, and medical forensic examination components needed to successfully assess and treat patients who have experienced this type of assault. Fourteen case reviews will supplement the training points for continued learning.
